Blind Cricket England

and Wales (BCEW)

Umpires Panel

Blind cricket has been played in Britain since the 1940's. In fact, the founding members of British Blind Sport (BBS) were cricketers. Visually Impaired (VI) cricket in Britain has come a long way and is rapidly establishing itself as a high quality national and international sport. Indeed, the England team is amongst the best in the world at this time. Teams from all around the country (Hampshire, Essex, Sussex, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, South Wales, Birmingham, London and now Yorkshire) compete in the BCEW League and Twenty20 Cup, as well as the BBS/Primary Club Cup competition (the final of which has been held at Edgbaston and Lord's). The 2010 season sees four international matches against India, and the next VI world cup is likely to be staged here in England. In addition, there will be several "exhibition" matches at test and county venues. However, despite the ongoing work of BCEW, BBS, The Primary Club and the ECB the players are struggling to receive the recognition and support that they so richly deserve.

It is essential for the onward growth and reputation of the sport that the standard of umpiring for all VI cricket is enhanced. As a minimum the players representing their country and their counties have the right to expect that their matches are controlled by qualified and experienced ECB ACO umpires. To meet this need BCEW are forming a new nationwide panel of 25 suitably qualified umpires who will be trained in the nuances of the VI playing regulations and in VI awareness to become confident and experienced in handling VI matches and players.

Umpiring VI cricket can be fast, difficult and challenging, but is always most rewarding, enjoyable and played in the best of the spirit of cricket. We are looking for active and experienced ECB ACO members who are committed to helping take VI cricket forwards. If you feel that you would like to take up this enjoyable and satisfying challenge, or even if you would just like to ask more please do get in touch.
