The £30m redevelopment of Edgbaston cricket ground has been launched with a public information event for local residents. The plans for a striking new stand and wider redevelopment of the ground were showcased prior to a planning application.

The impressive new stand will provide improved facilities for players and fans that include new changing rooms, bars and restaurants. The enhanced corporate hospitality and events space will support the ground’s position as one of the Midlands most popular venues. The changes will also increase the capacity of the ground by around 4,000.

Commenting on the redevelopment Phil Macdonald, operations and development director at Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) said: “We have worked hard with our partners to produce a truly innovative design that will reaffirm Edgbaston’s place as a world class venue. The redevelopment of the ground and wider masterplan will benefit the City by creating new jobs and giving Birmingham a stadium to be proud of. This project is a key part of our future plans for the club and our ability to remain competitive when bidding for International Matches.”

The plans for the ground also include office and residential development, a new hotel, public spaces and commercial opportunities. WCCC has partnered with local developer MCD to deliver the project.

MCD is a specialist in urban regeneration and currently has a number of developments in progress across the city including Brindley House and Derwent Foundry. The company is also behind the £85m regeneration of the Essex County Cricket Ground.

Commenting on the Edgbaston scheme Steven Byrne, chief executive at MCD said: “The plans for this project create a landmark stadium that will serve as a hub for a new area to live and work in the city. The breadth of support for the project reflects the pride that exists within Birmingham for its cricket ground.”

Playing a primary role in Birmingham city centre’s renaissance since the 1990s, MCD Developments has progressed to become one of the region’s leading lights in urban regeneration, currently investing some £300m into complex mixed schemes.

Advisors to the scheme include architects Broadway Malyan, urban design consultants Turley Associates, regeneration experts Urban Initiatives, property and construction practice Rider Levett Bucknall and marketing consultants Golley Slater.
